The end of Docker? The reasons behind developers changing their runtimes

Docker once led the container revolution but times have changed.
Developers are embracing faster, leaner, and more secure alternatives in 2025.



Is Docker Losing Its Edge?

Once the DevOps poster child was Docker. It became associated with portability, repeatability, and developer agility and brought the world contemporary containerizing. Saying “Docker” was essentially the same for a long time as saying “containers.” It revolutionized the way software was developed, tested, and implemented fundamentally.

But the container ecology will not be a one-horse contest in 2025. Although Docker is still somewhat popular, an increasing number of companies and developers are substituting lighter, more modular, Kubernetes-native solutions for it. The discussion now centers on which runtime will lead the next chapter of container innovation, not on whether containers are here to stay.

Is Docker then dying? Not entirely. In areas that count most today—performance, security, adaptability, and cost—it is being outperformed.

Let us investigate the forces behind this change.

The Issue with Docker in the Current Landscape:

1. Changes in Docker Desktop Licensing and Cost:

Docker’s choice to position Docker Desktop behind a paid membership for bigger organizations was among the most obvious turning points. While people and small projects could keep using it freely, companies discovered they had to pay for something once free—and not always any better than the new choices.

This action not only infuriated me but also let developers examine their reliance on Docker more closely. Open-source proponents and cost-conscious teams began wondering whether Docker’s worth warranted the additional outlay.

2. Performance Issues, particularly with Windows and macOS:

Docker runs rather well on Linux. Docker Desktop has long been a hassle for macOS and Windows users, though. Particularly during heavy builds or multiple container orchestration, it emulates Linux containers using virtual machines, resulting in slow performance, excessive CPU consumption, and battery drain.

Conversely, new solutions like Lima used under the hood by Finch offer more effective virtualization customized for developers, hence improving performance without the complexity and bloat of Docker Desktop.

3. Security Risk: Root Daemon Problem

Docker’s dependency on a root-running daemon is among the architectural choices it most faces criticism for. This central service controls containers and calls for higher privileges, therefore augmenting the possible attack surface in manufacturing settings.

Although Docker has evolved over time with features like user namespaces and rootless mode, security-conscious organizations typically want alternatives created from the bottom up with security in mind—like Podman, which operates totally without a daemon and can function as a non-root user.

4. A Monolithic Approach in a Modular World:

The ecosystem of Docker expanded fast. For multi-container orchestration, Swarm for clustering, and Docker Hub for registries—all tightly coupled. This all-in-one strategy first made Docker interesting.

But the world of cloud-native technologies has evolved, and the tendency is toward somewhat linked, specialized tools. These days, Kubernetes rules orchestration completely. Helm deals with packaging. Container runs like Containerd, concentrating just on container management. Docker’s wide yet opinionated tooling seems more constrictive in this terrain than beneficial.

5. Vendor Lock-In Fear

Developers are finally cautious about delving too deeply into Docker’s private tools. Though generally embraced, even the Dockerfile syntax is not controlled by an open standard like the OCI image and runtime requirements. Especially when open standards promise more flexibility and long-term stability, developers prefer to avoid being limited to a single toolchain.

Alternative Container Runtimes

Several container runtimes have become rather popular as Docker is not the only game available nowadays. Security, modularity, performance, and openness define each for certain use cases and reflect the values of the container-native world of today.

podman: a safe, daemonless substitute:

Originally created by Red Hat, Podman has quickly become a leading choice for systems managers and developers, giving security and compliance first priority. Podman, unlike Docker, does not depend on a central daemon. Rather, it makes it naturally safer and simpler to sandbox using a fork/exec model.

Podman also advocates rootless containers, which let users operate containers without enhanced rights. Since its CLI is almost exactly like Docker’s, teams looking for a more secure substitute without rewriting processes will find the change easy.

containerd: Native Choice Made by Kubernetes

Originally fundamental to Docker, containerd branched out and helped the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). Following Kubernetes 1.24’s deprecation of Docker support, Kubernetes distributions now use this default container runtime.

Containerd is producible, lightweight, and expandable. It does one function—managing container lifecycles—and excels. Under the hood, cloud providers including AWS (EKS), Google Cloud (GKE), and Azure (AKS) rely on containerd as a dependable, scalable solution for managed environments.

CRI-O: Designed for Kubernetes:

Still another CNCF-hosted runtime designed especially for Kubernetes is CRI-O. Strictly following the Container Runtime Interface (CRI), it maintains a lean and targeted running environment. While that’s a feature rather than a flaw, it does not support non-Kubernetes workloads.

CRI-O simplifies security by cutting out extraneous elements and concentrating just on Kubernetes. Red Hat OpenShift’s default runtime is here, and teams emphasizing minimalism and compliance are starting to use it.

Lima and Finch: Superior macOS Experiences

The performance problems with Docker Desktop on macOS produced a void that technologies like Lima and Finch are now covering. Lima develops Linux virtual machines for macOS tailored for container building on macOS. Built on Lima and nerdctl, a Docker-compatible CLI, Finch, an AWS-backed project, provides a flawless, high-performance substitute for Docker Desktop free of licensing constraints.

Finch is fast becoming the preferred alternative for macOS developers seeking a native experience with contemporary tools.

Other Notable Figures:

  • Designed for developers who wish to utilize known syntax with a modern runtime, nerdctl offers Docker-compatible commands on top of containerd.
  • Perfect for CI/CD pipelines, Buildah is a tool for creating OCI-compliant images free from daemon need.
  • Created by AWS, microVM technology finds use in Lambda and Fargate. Designed for multi-tenant systems and serverless workloads, it is incredibly lightweight and highly secure.

What This Means for Developers and DevOps Teams:

The emergence of substitutes does not mean you should abandon Docker right now. It does mean, however, that developers should reconsider where Docker fits—and where it doesn’t.

Still valuable in development is Docker. Its ecosystem, toolkit, and documentation are advanced. For local definition and running of multi-container settings, Docker Compose is still a great instrument.

But in production settings—especially those employing Kubernetes—Docker might not be the ideal choice. Kubernetes today prefers runtimes like containerd and CRI-O. Rootless operation via Podman helps security-conscious environments. On macOS especially, performance-sensitive platforms are turning elsewhere.

Furthermore, the modularization of the container landscape lets teams choose best-in-class solutions for every job instead of depending just on one all-in-class solution.

Should You Still Make Use of Docker by 2025?

It depends:

Use Docker if:

  • You want a quick, simple interface and are building and testing locally.
  • Your staff mostly depends on Docker Compose and traditional approaches.
  • You are running straightforward programs without coordination.

Think through substitutes should:

  • You are using Kubernetes clusters; a better fit is containerd or CRI-O.
  • Particularly in multi-tenant or regulated settings, you need reinforced security.
  • You wish to go toward open tools instead of Docker’s licensing approach.
  • You are maximizing for CI pipelines or macOS performance.

Another popular hybrid strategy is depending on containerd or Podman in CI/CD and production settings while developing locally with Docker.

The Future of Containerization:

Docker is shifting, not disappearing. The fast-changing container world is driven toward open standards, lightweight runtimes, and cloud-native ideas. Though it is no more the center of the container universe, Docker may still be important.

What we are seeing is the ecosystem that Docker helped grow maturing rather than her demise. More options now available to developers are a benefit.

The winners in this new terrain will be modular enough tools that fit any workflow, open by design, and safe by default tools.

Docker made the path clear. But a wider range of players—each advancing containerization to the next level—is helping to define the road ahead.
